An Zheng Awarded Chancellor's Dissertation Medal
An Zheng, a newly minted Ph.D. in UC San Diego’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is among seven university students selected to receive the 2022 UC San Diego Chancellor’s Dissertation Medal. Zheng was co-advised by computer science professor Hao Su, who is a faculty member of the UC San Diego Center for Visual Computing. Full Story

ACM Dissertation Honorable Mention
The ACM Dissertation Honorable Mention has been awarded to Pratul Srinivasan and Ben Mildenhall for their work on Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs). Srinivasan is the last of UC San Diego Computer Science & Engineering professor Ravi Ramamoorthi's graduate students to graduate from UC Berkeley. Professor Ramamoorthi moved from UC Berkeley to UC San Diego in 2014. At UC San Diego, Ramamoorthi Directs the UC San Diego Center for Visual Computing. Full Story

UC San Diego Center for Visual Computing faculty member Thomas A. DeFanti has been inducted into the inagural class of the IEEE Virtual Reality Academy. Established in 2022 by the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (VGTC), the IEEE Virtual Reality Academy recognizes significant contributions and highlights the accomplishments of the leaders in the fast-growing virtual reality field. A new dataset for better augmented and mixed reality
Computer scientists at the University of California San Diego have released OpenRooms, an new, open source dataset with tools that will help users manipulate objects, materials, lighting and other properties in indoor 3D scenes to advance augmented reality and robotics. Full Story

Zexiang Xu wins Chancellor's Dissertation Medal
UC San Diego computer science PhD student Zexiang Xu has been selected as this year's Chancellor's Dissertation Medal recipient within the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. Xu is currently a research scientist at Adobe Research. Full Story

Five UC San Diego teams receive $100,000 to support groundbreaking research
The Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QIF) recognizes creative Ph.D. students, providing them with funding, mentoring and other resources to pursue innovative research. Zexiang Xu Wins Doctoral Research Award
Congratulations to Zexiang Xu for winning the UC San Diego Computer Science and Engineering Department's Doctoral Award for Excellence in Research. His doctoral research, under the supervision of Ravi Ramamoorthi, is focused on sparse sampling for appearance acquisition and rendering. Full Story

Ravi Ramoorthi has been inducted into the SIGGRAPH Academy for his groundbreaking theoretical work in mathematical representations of visual appearance, and for translating these into computational methods with wide practical impact.
